Iljana Eggert

Senior Architect

Iljana joined greig + stephenson in 2022, having previously spent 15 years at Carpenter / Lowings. She studied at RWTH Aachen in Germany, known for its technical rigour, working as a Student Assistant at the Institute for Space Planning and later the Institute for Structural Design throughout her studies. In 2004 she was part of the team that won the 4th ArchiCAD prize for innovative glass applications.

She has a strong focus on design quality and a keen eye for detail, and finds particular satisfaction in making sure the original design intent survives through to the later technical stages of a project. Iljana started out with the Bradford team, which gave her a solid grounding in the practice’s way of working. She went on to lead the design of the Stockyard project, producing the architectural information that helped secure Levelling Up Funding in 2022 before taking it through to planning. She later took over Bilston Market at RIBA Stage 3 and led it to a successful planning application, and is currently working on Norwich Market, due for submission next month.

What she enjoys most is the work on the ground: meeting clients, traders, and stakeholders, navigating difficult terrain, and gradually shifting opinion towards genuine support for a scheme.

Outside the studio, Iljana is a dedicated maker, with hobbies spanning painting, pottery, cross stitch, and knitting. She regularly trades at craft fairs herself, giving her first-hand insight into the life of a trader. In 2023, partly to offset what she calls her “80-year-old-granny hobbies,” she took up drumming and is currently working her way through London Calling. She also collects espresso cups from everywhere she travels, and has recently started doing the same with drum sticks.
