"A new lease of life for the Market at Birmingham City Centre"

Project Details

The proposed new Birmingham Smithfield masterplan, which includes the relocation of the markets, is part of one of the largest and most attractive city centre development sites in the country.
At the heart of the master plan, it is proposed to build a new market quarter, facing the Parish Church of St Martin and the Bull Ring Shopping Centre.

  • LocationSmithfield, Birmingham
  • Area14 hectares
  • Time Scale2016 - Ongoing

Greig and Stephenson are proud to have developed the early-stage concept for Birmingham City Council and the market traders.

The markets will be located in a central position in the proposed 14 hectares masterplan – on the site of the existing wholesale market – making the market much more visible and accessible.

A major transformation to the south of the markets will include a new civic and commercial square, Festival Square and new public transport links. In addition, a new residential neighbourhood, office space and range of leisure uses will densify this central area of the city and revitalise the market offer, while bringing a new sense of community.
