Architectural interventions at a famous London store.

What we have done / Greig & Stephenson have worked with Selfridges London to develop various elements of their master plan. This set out to create better customer circulation and orientation and resulted in four new escalator cores within the building.Greig & Stephenson was also appointed as lead consultants to undertake a feasibility study and planning application for extending S.W.O.D. building fronting onto Duke Street on the north-east corner of the property.

The proposal involved extending the escalator up three additional floors into what is currently office accommodation (formerly the offices of Sears and the management suite) to create an additional 100,000 square feet of retail space. The proposal was granted planning consent in 1999 but Selfridges then re-orientated their expansion plans to the north including new stores in Manchester and Birmingham. During this time Greig & Stephenson worked as planning consultants for Selfridges to maintain the planning consent for a 45 room extension to the Selfridges hotel, live.

The hotel refurbishment and extension is currently under construction and is due to complete next spring. Other works with Selfridges over the past few years has included a new customer service area in store - the HMV store and Base Bar in the new multimedia department at basement level and as part of the store's essential infrastructure; we have facilitated the installation of 10,000 square feet of cold rooms at sub basement loading bay level.
