The Hop Exchange is a grade II listed building which was built as the centre of the Hop market for the English Hops and beer industry in 1864. The building was designed by Mr R H Moore, Architect.
The building was severly damaged in the 1920's by fire and the top four floors were subsequently demolished, as well as the great cast iron roof over the Exchange's atrium space.
Greig and Stephenson's proposal to the buildings owners, The Peer Group, is to re-establish the building as a 'market', retail led building re-development utilising the grand atrium floor as a public space and area for shopping, linking a new route connecting both Southwark Street and Park Street and through to the new yard behind Park Street called Brew Wharf.
The property can be sympathetically refurbished to contain a mix of uses including retail and hospitality on the lower floors, offices and residential, which could inhabit the re-built top floors of the Hop Exchange which will extend the building and bring it back to its former glory. The residential component could be a new hotel for the area around Borough Market and London Bridge.
The accompanying drawings illustrate this scheme which will breathe much needed life into this site and potentially influence commercial values on Southwark Street.
