Monmouth Coffee Design - May 2008
Greig & Stephenson recently completed a new roasting warehouse design for independent coffee roasting and retailing company, Monmouth Coffee. Situated under three Victorian railway arches in Maltby Street, London SE1 the 8,000 square foot warehouse conversion complements Monmouth's existing coffee shops in Covent Garden and Borough Market and provides a new roasting site, wholesale offices and a dedicated arch for staff training and visiting wholesale clients.
Glass has been used extensively to maximise natural light. Due to restrictions prohibited G&S from fixing materials to the viaducts, an innovative freestanding stainless steel frame is used to create an open plan mezzanine level office.
Howard Bates, Director at G&S, said: “the viaducts provide a superb location to work with from a design perspective. A lightness of touch is necessary to maximise the open space while making it practicable and adapting it to meet Monmouth's specific needs for its main production and training site."
The premises are transformed on Saturday mornings to a retail offer, with beans, drinks and pastries on sale as part of the Maltby Street Market that comprises a fine selection of London's food producers, wholesalers and retailers.
